Alan Coren is dead.
He was one of my favorite authors when I was growing up. Take "Golfing for Cats", a book whose cover featured a cartoon golf course with swastika flags marking the holes, and a cat in plus-fours teeing off. Asked why he used this cover, he explained with entertaining disingenuousness that he had researched popular book titles and discovered that golf, cats, and Nazis were sure winners - so why not combine them all?
Oh, here's the cover.
He had such inventive titles for his articles: "Will Dirty Old Men Get a Fair Crack of he Whip?" One of his stories has him taking the phone company at its word, and attempting to direct dial people like the Pope, Mao Tse Tung, etc. Hysterical stuff.
